The Centre for English Language Education (CELE) is now seeking exceptional scholars to join us as Preliminary Year Tutor in Business, Humanities and Social Sciences.

About CELE

Since the development of the Nottingham-Ningbo campus in 2004, the Centre for English Language Education (CELE) has aimed to promote high-quality EAP teaching in its structure and support of academic programmes delivered in China. With over 110 academic staff, the CELE operation at UNNC is now one of the largest of its kind in the world and is currently supporting students on UNNC Preliminary Year, pre-sessionals, summer schools and in-sessional language and academic skills support programmes.

About You

Applications are invited from suitably qualified teaching professionals able to teach one or more of the following subjects at introductory level: economics, management, critical and creative thinking, history, international relations, linguistics, communication studies. Successful applicants must have at minimum a master’s degree in in their area of specialism. They will be responsible for delivering intensive Preliminary Year courses and support to students both in the classroom and through online/blended teaching. Dependent on tutors’ aptitude and experience, there is also scope for involvement in specific projects such as summer school teaching. These are teaching-focused posts.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Teaching contact up to a maximum of 18 hours* per week (to agreed standards from a given syllabus) on PY Business, Humanities and/or Social Sciences courses (including online where necessary), as required.
  2. Working week to also include teaching preparation, marking and feedback as required, and other administrative duties relating to teaching (assessment, standardisation, report writing, attendance of regular course and general meetings).
  3. To participate in assessments and to act as invigilator in such examinations as required. Pastoral and academic care of students via an established personal tutorial system. To contribute to course and curriculum development and design, including course management, where appropriate.
  4. To take part in and contribute to staff development activities consistent with continuous professional development. To support and comply with the University’s teaching quality assurance standards and procedures. Effective liaison with the Head of CELE, the CELE Director of Teaching & Learning, other members of the management team, and academic staff. To ensure compliance with health and safety requirements in all aspects of work.
  5. To participate in training and staff development events as trainer or trainee as appropriate. To maintain appropriate professional development, expertise and awareness. To undertake other tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be required.

Person specification

Essential

  1. Master degree in teaching-related discipline (Business, Humanities and/or Social Sciences). Recognised qualified teacher status as evidenced by an appropriate PGCE (or willingness to complete such a programme) or other professionally accredited qualification.
  2. Confidence in analysing language and providing constructive and explicit feedback on students’ spoken and written work. Ability to work in a team and to teach and assess to agreed criteria. Ability to work under pressure and meet administrative/marking deadlines.
  3. English as a first language, or equivalent. English language competence. Good oral and written presentation skills, including excellent word-processing skills.
  4. IT skills essential including ability to deliver teaching and support through VLE such as Moodle.
  5. Two years of full-time teaching experience in a related discipline. Experience of full-time teaching in one or more of the named core areas (Business, Humanities and/or Social Sciences). Experience of teaching within an English- medium secondary/post-secondary environment and in preparing students for Higher Education. Familiarity with the UK university system.
  6. Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment. 

Desirable

  1. Postgraduate teaching qualification, such as an MA/MSc in a relevant discipline. DELTA/DipTESOL. Associate HEA fellowship or above.
  2. Evidence of ongoing professional development within the field (e.g. appropriate professional memberships; attendance at conferences; publications and presentations)
  3. Experience in using other VLE platforms an advantage (e.g.Microsoft Teams, OneNote, Online Forums etc.)
  4. Experience of teaching at university Foundation Year level. Experience of teaching students for whom English is not their first language. Experience in blended learning and lecturing large groups
