The National Oceanography Centre conducts brand new research in areas of environmental interest and concern, including innovative techniques in ocean exploration, from the coastal seas to the extreme ocean depths. We’d love for you to join our team.
Leading the way in ocean science
As a world-leading oceanographic centre, employing over 600 people, we provide excellent opportunities for staff from the UK and around the world, and from a range of backgrounds, to collaborate with their experience and ideas to produce the highest quality research.
Many of our staff are scientists, engineers or technologists who carry out world-leading research, or develop the machines and run the ships that help us understand the ocean environment. They are supported by a range of staff working in areas as diverse as finance, HR, facilities management and communications.
Our research is organised into five main areas: Marine Geoscience, Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems, Marine Systems Modelling, Marine Physics and Ocean Climate, and Ocean Technology and Engineering. Scientists at the NOC generally focus on one of these key areas of marine science and are responsible for obtaining in-depth knowledge and research. Many projects also involve interdisciplinary research, which involves the collaboration of scientists across a range of science research areas.
Both NOC sites are embedded in university campuses and are part of dynamic learning environments where graduate students carry out research alongside some of the leading scientists in their field.
Learning and development
NOC takes the learning and development needs of its staff extremely serious, and we were successfully reassessed against the Investors in People Standard in October 2018. We offer opportunities for staff to develop and enhance their skills through on the job development and relevant training, and to expand their horizons further. Also, as a member of the Athena SWAN Charter we promote the recruitment and career progression of women across the NOC and we are committed to promoting equality and diversity in our workplace.
