Hohai University (HHU), established in 1915 as Hohai Engineering School and with a long history of over 100 years, is a state key university directly administered by Ministry of Education of China with Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources as its distinctive feature, engineering subjects as its priority, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. The University is on the state "211 Project" and the state "Advantageous Discipline Innovation Platform Project" and one of the 56 Chinese universities who have graduate schools. The University is one of the first group of Chinese universities supported by Ministry of Education, Ministry of Water Resources, State Oceanic Administration, and Jiangsu Provincial Government.

Hohai University has three campuses in two cities taking up an area of about 1,7 million square meters, namely the Xikang Road Campus and Jiangning Campus in Nanjing and Changzhou Campus in Changzhou City. The University has two state-level research institutions, namely the State Key Lab of Hydrology-Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering and the State Engineering Research Center of Efficient Utilization of Water Resources and Engineering Safety. Hohai University is the first institution in China and the largest university in the world dedicated to the education and research in Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources and related disciplines.

The discipline of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources at Hohai University ranks No.1 nationwide at the Discipline Assessment conducted by Ministry of Education and enjoys remarkable reputation worldwide. The disciplines of Engineering and Environment/Ecology are in the top 1% of world ESI ranking. The disciplines of Civil Engineering, Mechanics, Ocean Sciences, and Business Administration are also very strong in China.

Hohai University has now over 3400 faculties and staff, including 1187 professors and associate professors, 483 PhD supervisors, 2 Academicians on the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 15 co-appointed Academicians.

To this day, the university has 32898 full-time students, comprising 19,666 undergraduates, 11,409 master students and 1823 Ph.D. students. Among them, there are 1051 international students currently in Hohai university and it has fostered a great number of individuals from over 100 countries and regions.
