The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education, and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

An exciting opportunity is available for a statistician / epidemiologist to undertake research using linked national electronic health data that will contribute to the improvement of care for patients with severe liver disease.

The research aims to study the ‘full care pathway’, including its outcomes, for more than 100,000 patients using administrative data linked to clinical datasets.

Key challenges are:

  • To develop and validate phenotyping algorithms that capture the complexity of the relevant conditions, treatments, and outcomes in patients with liver disease.
  • To study determinants of practice and outcomes, using appropriate methods to minimise bias.

This innovative NIHR-funded project is based in LSHTM, King’s College Hospital, and University of Exeter.

Candidates applying as an Associate Professor must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant topic and candidates applying as a Research Fellow must hold a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic.

The role requires skills and expertise in data science, statistics, and quantitative epidemiology.

The position is based within a research group at the LSHTM who have extensive experience in developing methods to use national electronic health data.

The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed term until 31 August 2025. The post is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research and is available from 01 June 2024.

The salary will be on the Academic Pathway, Grade 6 in the range £43,947 - £49,908 per annum for the Research Fellow and Grade 7 in the range £51,299 - £58,723 per annum for the Assistant Professor (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.
