UCL Engineering Sciences comprises eleven academic departments that undertake research and teaching across a wide range of disciplines including the Mechanical Engineering Department. The diversity of its research groups is one of its strengths leading to many interdisciplinary research opportunities. The Marine Research Group actively supports the marine and naval sector through research and consultancy focusing on:

  • Naval architecture
  • Marine engineering, including offshore energy technologies
  • High-performance computations applied to challenges in the marine sector
  • Monitoring and integrity of large-scale structures
  • Power systems within the marine sector

We are seeking to fill a research-focused position in Maritime/Marine Digitalisation and Automation at either the Lecturer level (equivalent of a U.S. tenure-track Assistant Professor position) or the Associate Professor level, depending on depth of experience and track record. For Associate Professor, the appointee would be expected to demonstrate sustained excellence in all aspects of academic life.

The successful candidate will develop research in the integration of digital technologies into all aspects of maritime industries, transforming how ships are operated, managed, and maintained. Areas that we aim to cover include but are not limited to: automation, data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and advanced marine propulsion systems, among others.

About the role

You will be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues within the Marine Research Group and the rest of the department as well as within UCL more widely:

  • Providing leadership (Grade 9)/support (Grade 8) for the delivery and development of research promoting the future of marine engineering in one or more of the following areas:
  • Marine/Maritime Automation,
  • Advanced Ship Propulsion Systems,
  • Clean/Sustainable Maritime Transport,
  • Smart Vessel/Port Operation,
  • Cybersecurity for Maritime Operations.
  • Supporting postdoctoral research staff and PhD students.
  • Contributing to the education of students on the MSc Marine Engineering and other programmes as required.
  • Contributing to the efficient running of the department.

About you

Eligible applicants must have either a PhD/EngD in marine engineering, mechanical engineering or other relevant discipline.

To be a success in this role the postholder will have an appropriate background of research expertise and significant contributions at the forefront of international research in marine engineering. In addition you will have a demonstrable track record of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching and pedagogical knowledge in mechanical or marine engineering or a relevant discipline. We are especially keen to meet with candidates with experience supporting the development of students / early career researchers / direct reports, through mentoring, sponsorship or personal tutoring. Additional essential requirements include the ability to secure research funding and to produce quality publications relevant to the discipline.
