The Eamon Cleary Chair in Irish Studies

The University of Otago invites applications for the Eamon Cleary Chair in Irish Studies. This Chair reflects Otago’s commitment to supporting research and teaching that will illuminate the development of Irish culture and the significance of Ireland in national, regional and global contexts, including the important connections between Ireland and New Zealand. 

We are committed to working closely with iwi and Māori organisations, and mātauranga Māori has become an integral part of teaching and research across the institution. We especially value our relationship with Ngāi Tahu, the mana whenua within their takiwā of Te Waipounamu, and the University’s principal Treaty partner.

Te mahi/The role

The University is seeking a scholar of distinction from any discipline that is pertinent to Irish Studies. The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of Irish culture and a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, supervision and research. 

The scholar appointed to the Chair will be responsible for fostering and leading teaching and research in Irish Studies, drawing upon existing strengths across a range of academic units in the Division of Humanities.  

In addition, the appointee will be expected to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; to foster postgraduate research at Masters and PhD level; to pursue original research in the area of their speciality; and to contribute to the development of the Division of Humanities and the wider University.

To be considered for appointment to this position, candidates will have:

• A PhD in an area within Irish studies. This can include but is not limited to Irish History, Literature, Politics, Creative Writing, and Theology.  
• A distinguished record of research publication in Irish Studies.
• Experience of teaching Irish Studies in a university setting.
• Experience of supervising postgraduate research theses.
• Evidence of international standing in the applicant’s field of particular expertise within Irish Studies.
• Commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ngāi Tahu, as mana whenua in the region and broad knowledge of the cultural traditions of other iwi/hapū.

While the University has a strong preference for making an appointment at the level of Professor, it is open to making an appointment to the level of Associate Professor if that rank is appropriate for the most suitable candidate.
