The Role

Northeastern University London wishes to appoint an Assistant Professor (Teaching & Scholarship) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Data Science. The appointee will help develop our UK undergraduate and postgraduate degree apprenticeship programmes including but not limited to the area of AI and Data Science and provide general service to the University within and across faculties.

We wish to appoint a specialist in AI and Data Science. Preference may be given to candidates with active interests in the relationship of AI and Data Science to cybersecurity and applied engineering.

The appointee will work in a multidisciplinary, cross-faculty team responsible for the degree apprenticeship programmes. The degree apprenticeship team uses innovative pedagogical approaches and best practices in digital education and collaboration to ensure an excellent learner experience for learners across England. The team currently delivers a growing portfolio of online work-related learning aligned to digital transformation, data science, artificial intelligence, and project management. The role is suitable for remote working, provided the appointee is able to attend the campus (in central London) for face-to-face work as and when required.

Core duties will include leading the development and delivery of cutting-edge courses (predominantly online, to apprentices) in AI and Data Science. Indicative topics include but are not limited to:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Machine learning
  • Python programming
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Computer vision
  • Natural language processing

About the Faculty

The newly formed Faculty of Computing, Mathematics, Engineering, and Natural Sciences (CoMENS) is undergoing a major growth at Northeastern University London. It is home to four interdisciplinary undergraduate dual-degree (in UK and US) programmes in the areas of Data Science, Data Science and Politics, Computer Science and Business, and Computer Science and Philosophy; four postgraduate programs in the areas of AI Ethics, Data Science, Computer Science, and Technology Leadership; and five degree apprenticeship programmes in the areas of AI, Data Science, Digital and Technology Solutions, and Biosciences.

The Faculty plays a major part in Northeastern University’s first-year student mobility program, offering undergraduate courses in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Healthcare, striving to inspire and equip entering students to be outstanding scientists.

Opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and scholarship abound: the Faculty’s grounding in humanics brings together computing, engineering and natural sciences with humanities based on ground-breaking research and research-oriented teaching practices.

Person Specification Criteria
Qualifications

  • PhD completed, or near completion (all but dissertation), or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant area.
  • FHEA status, or equivalent, achieved or expected (desirable). Key Criteria
  • Demonstrates, through evidence, excellent ability to be adaptable, innovative, and inclusive in the role as advertised with regards to teaching and service.
  • Flexibility and capacity to teach across a wide range of courses, where appropriate in collaboration with specialists from other disciplines.
  • Ability to develop excellent, cutting-edge online courses in AI & Data Science, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, on topics with significant appeal to students, especially those in work-based settings.
  • Willingness and capacity to undertake continuous professional development in the use of technology, software, and data in relation to their subject area; and to teach on these matters.
  • Ability to engage and develop working relationships with learning designers and technologists, employers, and colleagues across diverse disciplines within Northeastern University London and across the Northeastern University network.
  • Willingness and capacity to exercise appropriate leadership in the development of our AI and Data Science curriculum, and to do so through collaboration with a range of disciplines.
  • Experience in supervising (industry-based) AI & Data Science projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills, both face-to-face and online.
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies such as AWS, Google Cloud and ServiceNow (desirable).
